Adastra‘s meaning is “to the stars” in Latin, is one of the most futuristic trimaran superyachts in the world. Described by Boat International magazine as ‘one of the world’s most amazing super yachts’.
42.5-metres Adastra’s owner is Hong Kong-based billionaire shipping magnate Anto Marden, 64, and his wife Elaine, who already own two islands off Indonesia. They spent around 15million pound on turning the concept to the real eye-catching and wowing craft.
A yacht owner has said that a custom build yacht takes lots of consideration and patience. It might even deviate a little bit from your original plan.
Adastra was unveiled in China in April 2012 and took three years to build, as well as two years of planning and design. Her owner waited patiently for almost 5 years.
Ms Elaine says: ” the standard of professionalism is amazing, the care, love and attention that’s gone into building this boat is just amazing, and the teamwork has been superb”.
Mr Marden‘s thought and plan to build a larger yacht with global range. For such a journey he wanted something faster than a sailing boat and sought an oceangoing powerboat capable of a steady 16 to 18 knots in the open sea and a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 17 knots.
So he appointed Sussex-based yacht designer John Shuttleworth to concept his vision, who he has known for some 30 years.
‘The challenge of turning this concept into a viable luxury yacht has taken us to further research and to develop new thinking on stability and comfort at sea for this type of craft.’ Mr Shuttleworth told Boat International.
The owner had four key requirements for the design of his large power trimaran,’ Shuttleworth says, ‘offshore seaworthiness, comfort, the economy of operation and shallow draught.’ ‘The interior was to complement the modern exterior shape and reflect the family’s Asian home’.
Marden and Shuttleworth turned to Mark Evans, co-owner of the Australian shipyard McConaghy Boats, a yard in Zhu Hai, China.
The interior is a mix of Scandinavian and Asian style and was designed by a Dane who happens to be the first female commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.
The yacht features carbon fibre with a carbon superstructure, the hull of the Adastra is built from glass and Kevlar and the interior is the oak veneer over honeycomb.
All of the superstructure, the composites, the design of the flowing shapes are all in a result of the high quality and reduced weight.
Adastra is powered by one Caterpillar C18 engine of 1150hp at 2300 rpm and has 2 Yanmar 110hp @ 3200 rpm outrigger engines.
Her enormous petrol tank coupled with her dynamic sailing efficiency allows the Adastra to travel up to 4,000 miles without refuelling – the same distance from London to New York.
Adastra has a master cabin, the deck saloon, the open deck running aft also has a door that hinges out to create a bathing platform. She can be controlled, including the steering, remotely by an iPad within the range of 50 metres.
She accommodates nine guests and six crew on board. Primarily, it would cruise with just the Mardens aboard plus crew, but two additional cabins were planned to accommodate occasional guests.
She’s been taking her very experienced ocean voyaging owner and their family to cruise Indonesia and the world.
According to Marinetraffic, Adastra is cruising at CARIBS – Caribbean Sea right now.
