Weighing in at 40 percent of your annual operating cost, fuel is the largest stand-alone expense for a boat owner ad the most essential.

In this expert column Al Fullerton Managing Director of Fuegy provides 5 basic tips for bunkering with a new supplier. Here is a summary of those tips below:

Get a reference

A referral from other captains is worth its weight in gold. A reliable fuel supplier should have a list of clients you can contact for immediate confirmation.

Test

Use Kolor kut, or a similar water gauging paste to test each chamber on the fuel barge. This helps to test for any water in the bottom of the fuel tanks. The paste will turn red on contact indicating contamination.

Visual

Request a sample of the fuel provided by the supplier and have a good look at it. Let the fuel settle and then look for any contaminates swirling around inside it.

Fenders

The industry standard is tire and chain, which for any boat owner and captain is enthusiastic to keep you up all night. Ensure your boat’s infrastructure is safely guarded with as much cushioning as possible. Fuegy for example don’t use tires, but West Marine fenders, balls and anti scuff padding which lines the entire length of the fuel barge.

Protocol

The feeling of vessels should execute like that of an aircraft. The procedures and protocol should be blueprinted and methodically carried out. Equipment checks for nozzle, cam-lock size, confined flow rate and more must be managed with exact precession.

The barge

The more professional the team the more secure you should feel. If the barge is well maintained , you can assume the owner cares about quality . If the exterior looks bad imagine what the tanks must be like on the inside.
